A popular instant chat software Skype was found to have big flaw in user security, which allow hackers to acquire IP addresses of users and eventually their location. According to a study co-authored by Professor of NYU Poly, the security breach allows evil computers to find location of users.
Any skilled hacker can find user’s IP address using Skype and find their location, which is big threat to user privacy. However the company is trying to solve the problem while saying that it is common in all internet based chat clients. It should also be noted that hackers can secretly find location of users without them knowing. Interestingly the team also tested the flaw by making calls to numerous users on Skype.
Skype’s Chief Information Security Officer, Adrian Asher also said, “Just as with typical Internet communications software, Skype users who are connected may be able to determine each other’s IP addresses. Through research and development, we will continue to make advances in this area and improvements to our software”.
